How patios goes, from excavation to curing
The single most important number on a patio is the slope. A patio that drains toward the house sends every storm at the foundation, and in this soil that is how crawl space problems begin. It should fall away visibly, and it should be checked before the pour.
If a cover, pergola or outdoor kitchen is a possibility later, the footings for it are cheap now and expensive afterwards. Worth deciding at the design stage even if the structure is years away.

Patios: common questions about base, steel and finish
Why does my concrete patio hold water?
It was poured flat, or it settled. A patio has to fall away from the house — about a quarter inch per foot — so rain runs off it rather than sitting or heading for the foundation. Water on a patio in Middle Tennessee is ice on a patio in January. A settled slab can sometimes be lifted; a flat one is a design fault from the day it was poured.
Can a patio be built so a cover can be added later?
Yes, and it is cheap to do at the pour and expensive later. Footings for posts are set in the slab at the time, sized for a roof load, so a pergola or a cover can go on without cutting into the finished patio. If a cover is a possibility, it is worth saying so before the forms go up.
